Bernard Weller and a Rich Merchant

When Bernard Weller, a well-known English journalist, was a young beginner in his profession, he was once sent by his newspaper to interview a rich old Scottish merchant. The editor wanted to publish a story on how the merchant had made his enormous fortune.
It was evening. The young journalist was shown into a small, dusty room where an old man was sitting at his desk and reading by the poor light of a single candle. It was the merchant, and he met the journalist benevolently.
On hearing the journalist's purpose he said "Oh, it's a long story, the way I have earned my money. While I'm telling it I'd rather save the candle." With these words he carefully put out the light.
"Never mind the story, Sir,"Bernard Weller protested "Thank you very much for your cooperation. Now I quite understand the way you have made your fortune!"
And the young journalist went out of the dusty room with a feeling of relief
